Fix Messy QuickBooks Books Money that was yours
A house bill in the file, or a deposit that came from you, is not a business result.
The house bill
Electric, gas, water, and the home internet are costs of the house. If you work from a room in that house, only the share that room represents belongs with the business. The rest is personal.
Putting the whole bill in one expense makes the month look leaner than it was. We move the personal share out before anyone reads a profit number from that month. A dedicated business line that is billed on its own can stay.
A personal bill that landed in the business is a cost on the wrong side of the file. We move it before the month gets a last day, so the profit number describes the work and leaves the house bill on the owner side.
The deposit that was not a sale
Money you put into the business so it could make payroll or cover a bill is not income. It is your money arriving. If it sits in sales, the year looks stronger than the customers made it.
We trace the deposit to the account it left. If it left your personal account, it is not a customer. The same test runs the other way when you take money out. That amount is not a meal and not supplies.
Door cash and a card batch from a real customer stay income. The test is the source, not the fact that cash showed up. Two deposits on one night can both be real, and only one of them came from a customer.
What changes on the return
A month cleaned this way gives the return a profit that matches the work. Leaving the house bill in place is a problem you would be repairing later, on a year that is harder to reopen.
A tax result stays off this page on purpose. The direction is enough. Personal amounts come out. Sales that were never sales come out. What remains is the business.
If the amounts are large and a prior year is already filed, say so. The page on a year left open is the next read.
Name the bill or the deposit. A house utility and an owner transfer are both welcome in the note.
