A holding account is a place to ask a question, not a place for a balance to live.
Why the balance is still there
Someone did not know where a line belonged, so it was parked. That was a fair move for a day. It stops being fair when the statement date arrives and the balance is still sitting there.
The uncategorized bucket and any account whose only job is to wait should be empty at the end of the sort. If a balance remains, the month does not have a last day, no matter how tidy the expenses look.
A parking account full of lines we meant to sort is a pile with no filing system under it. The pile can sit there for a season and still leave the question unanswered. We empty it or we name the question before the statement date.
Where a parked line is allowed to go
It can become an ordinary expense once a receipt or a statement shows what it was. It can move to the owner side if it was personal. It can be a loan or a card nobody had added yet, in which case we add the account and ask for its statement.
It can belong to another company you own. Then both files get an entry. One side left dangling is how a cleanup looks done in one company and broken in the other.
We do not move a line out of the parking account on a hunch. A document or a decision you make out loud comes first. The open questions stay visible until then.
The feed that fills this account is on the review list. The chart that gives it too many names is on the twin accounts.
Empty means empty
When the sort ends, the parking accounts are zero and then closed so next month cannot hide in them again. Leaving them open with a zero balance invites the same habit.
If a question truly cannot be answered yet, we say so in a note you can find. We do not bury it under a new account name and call the file clean.
Name the account if you can see it. If you cannot, say the uncategorized bucket still has a balance.
